Much like a nostalgic form of Fight Club, there’s been no denying that the playlists we once embarrassingly hid on an iPod that hadn’t been updated since 2006 have been finding their ways into the underground clubs and house party kitchens at an almost alarming rate over the last twelve months. So when the folk at Academy Music Group approached Discovered to team up with them for the so obviously named, The Black Parade, we immediately found our inner fourteen-year-old selves screaming yes!

So it’s time to unlock the bedroom doors we so willingly slammed in our parents’ faces (and are still apologising for, or in some cases paying for a new frame..), clad on as much black as possible, sport that once awkward Fall Out Boy shirt that was hidden in the back of your wardrobe, maybe not apply the eyeliner, and get ready to party like it’s anything but post 2012 all over again…

JIMMY EAT WORLD – ‘PAIN’

There’s not much we can say about this really is there? It’s simultaneously the most hype and emo song that is possibly ever written. There’s the riff and the lyrics, the way that you can totally throw yourself around during the chorus while screaming ‘It takes my pain away!’ Just listen to that and tell me it doesn’t throw you into chills and it’s not just nostalgia, is it? Thank you cool uncles of emo…

BRAND NEW – THE QUIET THINGS THAT NO ONE EVER KNOWS

We don’t think that it’s normal for a club night to leave people in tears but here we are, genuinely looking forward to it. Catch us crying into each other’s shoulders blasted on cheap wine singing about keeping the blood in your head and feet on the ground just like we did when we were fourteen. Another rager that keeps on raging.

MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE – WELCOME TO THE BLACK PARADE

Right, where do we start with this one really? I can hear that first note from at least a mile away and we bet that you can too. We get it you don’t like My Chem anymore, but seriously? This is one song that is almost impossible not to sing along if no one’s watching or you’re wasted, either one works.

MOTION CITY SOUNDTRACK – EVERYTHING IS ALRIGHT

Yes, Justin Pierre, yes everything is going to be alright. This is a song to put a smile on your face and a song on your lips but god damn if it isn’t emo.

BILLY TALENT – DEVIL IN A MIDNIGHT MASS

That opening riff is one of the most exciting things that has ever been written by a group of humans. Look it might be new-wave punk but who cares you jammed to this when you had a fringe and it counts alright?

fall out boy – nobody puts baby in the corner

This is for all of the friends too drunk you have to prop them up in the corner…only for them to come dancing back over mid song, before eventually being thrown out for stage diving off something or someone they shouldn’t stage dive off….Plus this was at the height of Patrick Stump’s whiney days, whine like you mean it!

PANIC! AT THE DISCO – LYING IS THE MOST FUN A GIRL CAN HAVE WITHOUT TAKING HER CLOTHES OFF

Bit of a hookup anthem this. Fancied someone ten years ago and they still got it? Well Brendon Urie being ever so suave, plus a hip moving bass line, will most definitely result in at least some form of grinding between testosterone boys and harlequin girls.

THE ACADEMY IS – THE PHRASE THAT PAYS

If you were fortunate enough to grow up through the ‘Decadence’ record label time of Emo, then The Academy Is were your awkward best friend that you didn’t want to admit to liking. But if this banger drops, you will find instant gratification in finding you weren’t the only one who knew this song word for word.

PARAMORE – CRUSH CRUSH CRUSH

‘Onetwothreefour!’ There you go now you know exactly why this is on the list? It’s also got the added bonus of Hayley Williams being who at least 60% of the emo crowd based their style off for years. It’s also pre Paramore sounding like they wrote the soundtrack for the revival of Crash Bandicoot.

FRAMING HANLEY – LOLIPOP

Ugh. This is one of the only songs on here that we won’t defend right the way to the hilt. It’s bad, we know it’s bad. This is for the ‘oh fuck this song’ moment that’ll happen when it plays.

blink 182 – i miss you

How about a room full of people singing in an over the top Tom DeLonge accent? That sounds like fun right? Yes it really will be won’t it? Another fun game is to just sing random songs like Tom, trust us.

taking back sunday – cute without the ‘e’

This is a sing along king. Just throw this on and the group of all the hard kids that were only here ‘ironically’ and they’ll show you their true colours. But maybe that’s all just wishful thinkin’…

cute is what we aim for – curse of curves

Another song that we’ll admit might not be as great as we remember it being. The lyrics might not be as good as we remember and it might not be as punchy as we remember. And… and…and… Fuck it.

THE BLACK PARADE RETURNS TO THE HOME OF EMO, MANCHESTER, IN SEPTEMBER, CHECK IT OUT!
