RATING: 7/10

Chase Atlantic are back with a brand-new album. Following the release of their self-titled debut in 2017 and an EP which dropped earlier this year titled ‘DON’T TRY THIS’, the Australian alt pop and R&B three piece are set to release second full length ‘PHASES’ on June 28th. The genre-melding group may not be to everyone’s taste, offering a variety of music as they blend alternative pop, R&B, Pop Rock and Indie Pop, but you’ll be sure to love this album if you’re fans of the like of Sleeping with Sirens, Post Malone, The 1975, Good Charlotte and more. It’s an album fueled by an obsession to create, write songs and make up catchy beats, all coming together to complete this latest, and enjoyable, release.

The twelve track starts off with a song appropriately titled ‘INTRO’. Most of the time when we get these types of songs, they give you a real feel for what you’re about to hear throughout the album, summarised into a short track. It’s an interesting one to listen to  – an instrumental with a slow and mysterious beat. ‘ANGELS’ comes next, with its eerie sound really showing the R&B mixed electronic synth-pop style that this group has become so known for.

“offering a variety of music as they blend alternative pop, R&B, Pop Rock and Indie Pop.”

‘PHASES’ and ‘LOVE IS (NOT) EASY’ share many similarities and aren’t the best songs on the album, not standing out as well as the rest. There feels like there’s too much going on and at one point you hear the chorus, background singing and then the R&B samples all at once overpowering it, it was slightly overwhelming.

‘HER’ is the latest single with a music video that dropped recently and is one of the best songs on the album by far. It’s portrayed as a feel-good track on the outside, but when you dig a little deeper it focuses on a rather serious subject. A song based around falling in love with someone, it has such a catchy beat, one that you will want to blast out at a party in the summer. It’s an infectious tune which stands out so much more than many of the other tracks on the rest of the album.

“relaxing and chilled out in places as well as upbeat and catchy in others”

‘NO RAINBOWS’,’ ‘HEAVEN AND BACK,’ and ‘EVEN THOUGH I’M DEPRESSED’ have that same synth-pop sound and are slightly more upbeat, which makes them fun to listen to, and ‘STUCKINMYBRAIN’ is a tune that is again catchy and infectious. The lyrics are great, and the overall composure of the song is well done. It definitely ‘sticks in your brain’!

‘TOO LATE,’ and ‘I NEVER EXISTED’ are more electronic, the vocals are a lot deeper and soothing, and the album ends with ‘I DON’T LIKE DARKNESS’ a much more slower and uplifting kind of song. Overall the record has its highlights and downfalls. It’s relaxing and chilled out in places as well as upbeat and catchy in others with some definite songs that would get you up dancing. This band certainly know how to make a beat that will make you feel good.
