Austin Jones, a once youtube and vine star who gained popularity for his videos about alternative/emo bands back in 2015, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for coercing six minors to send him sexually explicit videos.
Jones, 26, had a massive teenage following online from making Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco covers that generated over a million views on his youtube channel.
On Friday he pleaded guilty to charges of child pornography. In court the prosecutors said that Jones had admitted to reaching out to 30 girls online before his arrest in 2017.
The prosecutors claimed that Jones ‘preyed on their youth, their vulnerabilities and most glaringly, their adoration of him.’
A defense for Jones contended to the court that Jones life was ‘marred with abuse, pain, loss and death.’ Jones admitted to having online conversations with six girls between the ages of 14 and 15 from 2010 and 2017 in a 27-page plea.
These conversations would see Jones encouraging the girls to send him sexually explicit videos of themselves on Facebook, including Jones suggesting poses and underwear choices for them.
Prosecutors had asked for an 11-year sentence, but Jones will only serve 10 years for counts of child pornography.
