Lincoln based alt-rock up and comers CARRY THE CROWN have been championed by Radio 1 Introducing as ones to watch out for and recently dropped a new release entitled ‘I Know You’. The digital download, available on all streaming platforms, features two new songs – ‘Caught In The Middle’ and ‘Planmaker’ – and the band have got a bunch of shows lined up throughout the rest of 2019.

They’ve come a long way since our very first introducing feature on them back in 2017, so we had a catch up with vocalist MARTIN JAMES about what they’ve been up to and what they’ve got lined up next…

FIRST OFF HOW MUCH HAS CHANGED FOR THE BAND SINCE YOU FIRST APPEARED IN THE MAGAZINE IN 2017?

Well where do I begin! So much has changed for us. We’ve played on some incredible stages with some amazing bands such as ROAM, Hactivist, Crazytown, King No-One etc. We’ve also been played on radio 1 which was pretty cool as well as getting radio play from every corner of the globe!

WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES AND HOW HAVE YOU OVERCOME THESE?

Time. There isn’t enough of it in the day! Between working to support the band and then actually rehearsing, writing and touring we are left trying to find the most effective ways of doing things so that we can try and get to where we want Carry The Crown to go.

AT THE SAME TIME HOW MUCH HAVE THESE CHALLENGES AND EXPERIENCES ALLOWED YOU TO GROW AS BOTH PEOPLE AND MUSICIANS WITHIN THIS TIME FRAME?

Weirdly it has actually made some of us better at our outside jobs as we prioritise, plan and problem solve a lot quicker now!

LET’S TALK THE NEWEST SINGLE, CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE. YOU TOLD US THE TRACK IS ABOUT THE SACRIFICES YOU HAVE TO MAKE TO PURSUE YOUR DREAMS. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST SACRIFICES YOU’VE HAD TO MAKE AS A BAND TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?

That’s is a tough one, our guitarist Rupert once had to bail on his and his partner’s anniversary to go and play a show! We also have had to sacrifice stuff like being at home with family a lot as most of our free time we are constantly working to take this band to the next level.

WHAT HAS KEPT THIS BAND MOTIVATED OVER THE YEARS?

We love what we do more than anyone will ever know. To get up on stage as the 5 of us and be Carry The Crown to us means everything.

LET’S ALSO TALK ABOUT THE NEW APPROACH YOU’RE TAKING. IT’S SIMPLY SONICALLY MASSIVE. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO RETURN TO MORE ‘ROCKIER’ ROOTS WITH THE SOUND?

I think that stems from where we all came from musically. This is the style of music we love writing. We aren’t pop, we like our songs to have some balls to them, we want to hear our crowds screaming the words ‘I know you’ back at us. Also when we were working with Matt (our producer) he very much pushed for us to do what WE loved.

WHEN IT COMES TO THE ACTUAL WRITING WHAT HAVE YOU TAKEN INFLUENCE FROM THIS TIME ROUND, AND HAS THIS CHANGED DRASTICALLY SINCE YOUR LAST RELEASE?

If I’m being honest our influences haven’t changed since the day we started this band! We try to inspire one and other when we are writing. We don’t have a formula.

GENRE WISE YOU FLY UNDER THE TERM ‘ROCK’ – WHICH STILL SEEMS TO BE A DIRTY WORD THESE DAYS. WHY DO YOU THINK THAT NEEDS TO CHANGE?

We don’t tend to get involved in voicing our opinion in all that sort of thing. To us when we here ‘rock’ our eyes light up and ears stand on end, to us, rock isn’t dirty, it’s filthy… in a good way!

DO YOU ALSO FEEL AT THE SAME TIME THAT BANDS ARE RESTRICTING THEMSELVES BY PIGEONHOLING THEMSELVES IN WITH GENRES?

100% we very much try not to give an exact genre when explaining who we are. Why limit yourself to one thing when you can be so much more than that.

YOU’RE A BAND WHO HAS BECOME A LOT MORE ACTIVE IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS OR SO WHEN IT COMES TO THE LIVE ASPECT OF EVERYTHING. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO BE TOURING THESE DAYS? ESPECIALLY NOW MORE THAN EVER BEFORE?

Touring is so important. Now days there are so few bands actually getting the opportunity to go and tour that when the offer comes up you have to take it. When you go out on the road you are constantly being able to go and meet new fans and interact with new contacts. Not to mention, we love nothing more than getting up on stage for an hour and make sure that people have the most amazing time, we aim to make it so for at least one hour you can come watch us and forget about the problems and stresses that you had before you walked into the venue.

FINALLY WHAT ELSE CAN WE EXPECT FROM CARRY THE CROWN IN 2019?

More music. More shows. Repeat.
