FROM: LINCOLN | FOR FANS OF: DEMOB HAPPY, TIGER CUB

Every band is currently trying to slide into their own sub-genres, or are finding themselves desperately clinging to another pigeonhole, but not Future Theory. Whilst their sound can be comparable to grunge, and outfits such as Demob Happy, Future Theory are a band defining their own sound, and we sat down with the futuristic mob to find out just why…

FIRST AND FOREMOST YOU GUYS HAVE A VERY HEAVY GRUNGE SOUND. WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO CREATE THIS TYPE OF MUSIC? WAS IT A CONSCIOUS DECISION?

If you listen to the first EP with the original bass player I would say the sound was very different to how it is now. On reflection of the grunge sound I personally would say it has been a development of the band growing to fit our own characters and tastes. Both Max and I are influenced by bands like sound garden, QOTSA just for an example. The rhythmic beats from Rohan are from a much more polished heavy music background. Every time I get in his car he has some bizarre track with a ridiculous beat to it. The eerie sections have Chris written all over them, being a massive fan of radio head, Metallica and Coldplay he has taking all three bands from totally different genres and turned them into an amalgamation of tasteful echoes, gritty riffs and soaring solos.
AT THE SAME TIME YOU DON’T SEEM TO BE PIGEONHOLING YOURSELVES INTO ANY PARTICULAR GENRE. WHAT HAVE BEEN BOTH THE PROS AND CONS OF THIS?
The ability to not be able to really pigeonhole ourselves means we appeal to such a variety of audiences. Real audiophiles have respect for the intricacies we put into our songs, yet they still remain quirky enough to be different, but not so far that they alienate everyone else.

YOU SEEM TO BE DRIP FEEDING SINGLES BEFORE RELEASING AN EP. WHAT INFLUENCED THAT DECISION?
The idea of releasing quality content over extended periods of time means that we won’t just drop one big load and then disappear again for another year. It gives us chance to interact with our fans over long periods of time, and it means people will always have some content to consume. It also gives us opportunities to bring them along the recording process with us, when we update our Instagram and Facebook it’s a heads up for more juicy musical deliciousness on the way.
YOU’RE ALSO A VERY, VERY VISUAL BAND. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO NOT ONLY EXIST AS A BAND THESE DAYS BUT ALSO AS A BRAND?
I’d say our main appeal is being all over 6’2, generally every sound check we have is followed by “christ you lot are tall”. It is actually quite entertaining as I and Rohan are ‘regular’ tall, but next to Max at 6’7 I feel like a younger brother. Max and Rohan are both very fashion sensible, and both promote Street Panda on every occasion. Me? Well, I just wear whatever is laying around.
YOU HAIL FROM LINCOLN WHICH HAS AN ‘INTERESTING SCENE’. DO YOU FEEL THAT YOU’RE HAVING TO LOOK ELSEWHERE TO FIND SHOWS FOR YOUR KIND OF SOUND?
On the contrary we have always been welcome in Lincoln – the city is thick with all varieties of rock, metal and indie bands, which gives us a foot in the door at most venues. We’ve been invited back to venues plenty of times as we draw a great crowd – our fans are really dedicated, and make it possible for us to always pack a room.
“It’s hard enough trying to explain to our families what Future Theory is, never mind a whole new species…”
WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR APPROACH TO TAKE A MORE ‘SPACE’ RELATED IMAGERY?
The imagery conveys the heart of the band, which is making deliberately obscure and artistic statements, through six strings and a drum kit. The name really advocates the imagery just as much as the music. It’s fun to be a bit weird, a bit out there, and something different. If aliens land on the planet we’ll probably be in some incredibly elaborate holding pen before we can open our mouths – It’s hard enough trying to explain to our families what future theory is, never mind a whole new species.
WHILST A LOT OF BANDS ARE CONSISTENTLY PLAYING LIVE, IT SEEMS LIKE YOU GUYS ARE CONSTANTLY PUTTING OUT RECORDED MATERIAL. WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED TO KEEP WRITING?
There is no motivation required, we just love music, it just seeps through our skin the same way breathing is second nature. We are fortunate to have such a broad spectrum of influences, there is always a new way to spin an idea.
FINALLY, YOU HAVE AN EP ON THE HORIZON, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM IT?
On our upcoming album you can expect everything from stomping rock songs, catchy choruses and to definitely drown in a sea of reverb and delay. We’re so proud of our songs and our creations, we’ve re-recorded tracks on multiple occasions to make sure they’re coming out to you the same way we envision them in our hearts and minds.
We’re excited to keep recording and releasing new music, we appreciate every like, every share and every comment. We’re eternally grateful to the fans – YOU make this happen!
