The 12th of October 2018 marks the release of the 7th studio album by metal core band Atreyu.
‘In Our Wake’ is also the second album release from the band since their year long hiatus from 2013 to 2014. Consisting of 12 tracks, ‘In Our Wake’ takes a different progression route to previous album ‘Long Live’, which maintained very heavy tones throughout. The album as a whole seems softer with only elements of that heavier sound. This said, it still stays true to the sound and style Atreyu have forged previously.
Music videos for The Time is Now (track 3) and, In Our Wake, have already been released. When discussing the video for the title track, frontman Alex Varkatzas said, “Hold on for your lives, this is the craziest Atreyu video ever. It’s an epic journey through time and space. You haven’t seen anything like this.” Drummer Brandon Saller added, “The time is now is about taking life by the balls. Life won’t wait for you. There is no ‘right time. Do what you want. Live your dream and do it now.” They were not wrong the multi-dimensional music video will leave your eye confused but your eardrums happy.
“The construction and blend of music and lyrics creates a moving reaction that leaves a lasting impression..”
Track 5, ‘Blind Deaf & Dumb’ captures the energetic angst style Atreyu created in ‘Long Live’. Starting off with a chant of the title, it leaves listeners raising their fists, banging their heads and stomping their feet. This heavy-guitar metal song is a prime example of Atreyu’s music. In contrast to this, ‘Terrified’ perfectly demonstrates the emotive side of the album with swift moving soft tones and emotionally revealing lyrics – “I’ve been terrified for all of my life I’ve been losing the fight, I’m terrified I was falling apart until you made it right.” The construction and blend of music and lyrics creates a moving reaction that leaves a lasting impression.
‘In Our Wake’ is a perfect portfolio of all the elements Atreyu have presented through their music since 1998. With a mixture of metal, punk and softer tones ‘In Our Wake’’s track list is perfectly structured to allow the listener to smoothly flow from one song to another. The way the 12 songs have been compiled is different to other metalcore albums in the sense that instead of starting heavy then moving into the softer songs at the end…the softer songs are entwinted with the heavier metal anthems. This gives the album an edge and a seamless flow.
“‘‘In Our Wake’ is destined for great things and could be Atreyu’s defining album in years to come.”
In summary, if you are a fan of Atreyu you will not be disappointed with this album it will fit slickly into the rest of their back catalogue. If you have not yet been introduced to the music of Atreyu, ‘In Our Wake’ is a perfect starter album to give you a sense of their sounds, tones and writing styles. Whichever way this album is being consumed the delivery and quality of each track will hold the same amount of weight.
So, what’s next for Atreyu? The band will headline a US tour with the like of Memphis May Fire and Ice Nine Kills this November. UK and Euro dates are currently being considered and planned. ‘In Our Wake’ is destined for great things and could be Atreyu’s defining album in years to come.
