Much like the ethos of the genre itself, whilst this current issue (featuring hardcore newcomers KNOCKED LOOSE, grab your copy here) celebrates the incredible future and soundscape that has been laid out for the new wave of hardcore, we take a leaf out of the book OG Freddy Cricien (Madball), and have him return us to the roots of the genre with his top artists that changed the scene as we know it.
“No surprise here. they are the band that introduced me to NYHC, quite literally. They are family of course, but that doesn’t negate the fact that they have truly influenced NY and the entire hardcore movement worldwide, and even the metal scene! Since the early 80’s until now their career is impressive to say the least. Great songs, great live band, what more could you ask for? They are the godfathers in my humble opinion.”
These guys are very underrated outside of the scene. Brightside is simply brilliant in every way, almost flawless. They definitely influenced us, and I will always have them on any top 5 list related to hardcore, New York, or otherwise.
This sometimes underrated band is influential not only to Madball, but to some of the others that have influenced us, so that says a lot! They put Detroit on the map and then so many others, Total respect!
To not mention the influence of Age Of Quarrel, and the live energy of the Mags would not be right on my part. Another hugely influential band both on wax and live. They’ve always been great musicians. John (Joseph) was a beast of a front man and still kills it. Mackie changed the game with his drumming style, he was one of the architects of bop and groove and pocket drumming within our scene. Before him a lot of the drumming (I’m speaking about NY) was punk-derived or metallic. He brought a whole other soulful element to the genre.
SICK OF IT ALL
These guys are an integral part of the scene. I do believe, we share some influences and they most certainly have influenced many, many others. Their drive and tenacity are infectious and an influence on a lot of us. They are pros in every way, they set a high standard. They’ve helped bring hardcore to another level, and should always be mentioned right alongside anyone on this list.
BAD BRAINS – HONOURABLE MENTION
Musically speaking, our band may not be hugely influenced by these guys, but power and energy wise I think a lot of us are influenced by that. Hardcore is supposed to be, in my opinion, about losing yourself in the music. You become possessed by the energy and you transfer that back and forth. These guys embodied that at their peak.
