ARTIST: DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE
TITLE: THANK YOU FOR TODAY
LABEL: ATLANTIC RECORDS
Picture the scene – The suns setting, it’s summer, it’s still warm (which for the record is unusual for England), you’re in the car and you turn on the new Death Cab forCutie album. That right there, is the perfect environment for this release. Melancholy indie soft rock.
It’s been a few years since Death Cab last released an album, disappearing into the night up until now. Ben Gibbard and Co. open the record with a floaty electronic keyboard piece “I Dreamt We Spoke Again”. Not far off what you’d expect from a Bon Iver record at the start, drifting into a drum beat and Gibbard’s reverberant vocals which pulls you in. From the start, this feels like a completely different band in comparison to the last release. Where that was saturated in macabre tones from Gibbard’s personal life at the time, the tracks on Thank You for Today have a natural uplift to them. “I Dreamt We Spoke Again” makes you want to dance, whereas “Autumn Love” and “Gold Rush” emits ambient positivity in some way. “Summer Years” is faster paced, but enriched with the signature Death Cab guitar parts which make the band’s classic and unique sound.
It seems the band wanted to gamble more with their sound this time round, implementing a more electronic keyboard-y sounds overall with it the majority of the time working. Though a points it tends to make some of the songs sound similar. When Death Cab appeared on the scene in 1997, no one would have quite thought they would be making a ninth album many years later. More to the point, no one thought it would be so consistent in songwriting. Thank You for Today is the gift to the modern day Death fan who have followed them through their discography.
Though some of the tracks aren’t as strong as others on there, that can be easily ignored. This album is a statement of where they are now, with a bit of an upbeat vibe and still trying new things dynamically.
