Whilst 2015 may have been the year that pop punk began to take over the British isles like a raging infection, if you were to go back to 2010 you would find that the alternative sounds of Lower Than Atlantis and Deaf Havana were part of a movement that truly defined the sound of British music. Five years on, and it seems like the Croydon and Crawley lads, Press To MECO are about to make history repeat itself. With their new record, ‘Good Intent’ having been rivaling most of this year’s releases in the best undiscovered sector, we caught up with the threesome to talk touring, orgies, and ABBA…
“Maybe like some sort of love child from a Billy Talent, Dillinger Escape plan and ABBA Orgy …”
FIRST OFF HOW HAS 2015 BEEN FOR PRESS TO MECO?
“2015’s been awesome! It’s gone by so quick but I feel that’s only because so much has happened. Signing our first licensing deal with Best Before Records and then releasing our debut album are definitely two of the highlights. Hevy Fest was amazing too!”
YOU’RE SELF PROCLAIMED AS ‘ALTERNATIVE’, BUT WHAT IS PRESS TO MECO?
“Maybe like some sort of love child from a Billy Talent, Dillinger Escape plan and ABBA Orgy … just nowhere near as talented, haha”
WOULD YOU SAY THE MUSIC SCENE IN CROYDON STILL EXISTS?
“It’s certainly not what it used to be, even since we started up this band like 5 years ago. There’s definitely still a scene though. Scream lounge is pretty much the hub of all the Croydon shows at the moment. But some of the most promising bands we know at the moment are from Croydon. Wallflower, Bad Sign and Bellevue Days are all SICK!!!”
WOULD YOU SAY THE BRITISH MUSIC SCENE IS PRETTY STRONG RIGHT NOW?
“In terms of the standard of bands coming out at the moment the scene’s thriving. We’ve played with so many amazing bands just through touring up and down the UK.”
“There’s definitely still a scene though…”
YOU JUST RELEASED YOUR DEBUT RECORD ‘GOOD INTENT’. HOW’S THE REACTION BEEN? IS THE BAND NOW REACHING THE NEXT STEP IN IT’S CAREER?
“The reaction’s been really overwhelming. All the reviews have been really positive and even more importantly people seemed to have really connected with it. The album tour we did felt like a really cool step in the right direction. Every show people were showing up singing the words to the album. It was awesome!”
ON A SIDE NOTE YOU RANDOMLY ALSO ASKED FANS TO BRING THEIR DOGS TO YOUR NEW VIDEO SHOOT…
“All will be revealed very soon!”
YOU ALSO JUST ANNOUNCED A UK TOUR!
“Yes, with our good friends Allusondrugs and Max Raptor. We’re all so excited about it as we’re big fans of both those bands anyways. The fact Scuzz are really getting behind it too just adds the cherry on the cake really. We all can’t wait!!!”
FINALLY WHAT MAKES PRESS TO MECO SO DIFFERENT IN COMPARISON TO EVERY OTHER BRITISH BAND OUT THERE?
“I think there’s a handful of bands we could be likened with musically, but I think the 3 lead vocals and the way we layer and arrange our vocals is slightly different and it’s what gives us a small edge. That’s always the aspect people comment on too.”
