hen it comes to wanting to hear something other than just another metal band these days, it seems like at times you really do need to go looking. But when a band just as heavy, and just as exciting as the Californian nu-metal princes Cane Hill turn up, you soon begin to realise that you won’t be able to keep this band to yourself. Influenced by the terrors and tragedies of the 21st Century, from religion to politics, and with a love of playing nothing but disgustingly heavy music, we can guarantee that Cane Hill are a band that will have you craving for more than just their recent debut EP. Racists, terrorists, and misogynists, you have been warned…
“Music has become a generic term…”
FIRST OFF FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER HEARD OF CANE HILL BEFORE, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND?
“We’re fast, aggressive, and honest. It’s head banging metal.”
LA SEEMS TO BE THE HOME OF A LOT OF BIG METAL NAMES. WHAT’S THE METAL SCENE LIKE FOR NEW BANDS? “
Well we’re from New Orleans, LA so I honestly have no idea. But back home the scene is definitely evolving. There was a pretty big lull in the scene for the past four years or so, but with companies like Pavillion Entertainement working their asses off to get good shows, the city has a fighting chance. But this makes it hard for new bands to even form because there hasn’t been a market for them for a little while. Hopefully that can change in the next year or two. ”
HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO SUPPORT NEW BANDS?
“Obviously pretty important. No band is going to make it out of being new unless they get support. And then you have an endless cycle of “epics” who have been around for decades and a constant rotation of new bands regurgitating the same played out shit that never stick or make any waves.”
WITH THE METAL SCENE BECOMING OVER SATURATED, WHAT MADE YOU GUYS WANT TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND DO NU-METAL?
It wasn’t a conscious decision. We never sat down and said “let’s do this or that”. We wrote what we enjoyed listening to. We all grew up in the 90’s and 2000’s so it evident in our music.”
“The metal scene has become weak..”
DO YOU THINK METAL HAS JUST BECOME A GENERIC TERM? WHAT MAKES YOU PLAY THE MUSIC YOU DO?
“Music has become a generic term. I think the obsession with subgenres, image, and the visage of “band” has become generic. That’s why we play what we play because it’s what we want to play. Somewhere along the way the metal underground got weak. We’re here to kick its ass back to how it used to be.”
YOU HAVE SONGS SUCH AS ‘FRENCH 75’ AND ‘SUNDAY SCHOOL’. WHAT LYRICALLY INFLUENCES THIS BAND?
“The shit state of the world we live in. The religious patriarchy, the race wars, the fiscal inequality of it all. People are living like slaves to shit that doesn’t even exist and it effects the entire populace as a result. Humans are a fucked up breed and it’s easy to get lost in it. The lyrics are stories that encapsulate the need to transcend it all.”
YOU’VE SPENT THE LAST YEAR TOURING WITH THE LIKES OF THE ACACIA STRAIN AND HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD. WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THESE TOURS?
“Highlights? Free weed and headbanging”
FINALLY WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU IN 2016?
“We’ve got more planned than ever before…”
